The orders acquired at 31 December 2009 came to a total of EUR 1,786,071 thousand as compared with EUR 1,296,609 thousand during 2008, an increase of EUR 489,462 thousand or 37.7%.

The orders acquired by the Signalling Business Unit came to EUR 1,243,016 thousand (EUR 1,197,863 thousand net of transactions with the Transportation Solutions Business Unit), while Transportation Solutions won orders worth EUR 632,468 thousand, an increase by EUR 290,001 thousand from the same period of the prior year (EUR 342,467 thousand at 31 December 2008).

Orders ( M) and the Units’ contributions

The order backlog at 31 December 2009 totalled EUR 3,759,671 thousand, an increase of EUR 623,241 thousand (or 20%) on the EUR 623,241 thousand figure at 31 December 2008.
The order backlog of the Signalling Business Unit at 31 December 2009 amounted to EUR 1,980,191 thousand (EUR 1,755,858 thousand, less transactions with the Transportation Solutions Business Unit), of which EUR 1,269,449 thousand related to the parent company Ansaldo STS, EUR 377,214 thousand to the US subsidiary Ansaldo STS USA, EUR 228,764 thousand to the French subsidiary Ansaldo STS France and EUR 135,599 thousand to the subsidiaries in the Asia/Pacific region.

The Transportation Solutions Business Unit’s order backlog at 31 December 2009 came to EUR 2,048,073 thousand, chiefly relating to the following projects:

  •  High-speed trains (EUR 44,929 thousand);
  •  Copenhagen Metro (EUR 31,825 thousand);
  •  Construction of the Naples Metro and Genoa Metro (EUR 468,008 thousand);

  •  Rome Line C driverless metro (EUR 299,525 thousand);
  •  Thessaloniki driverless metro (EUR 155,379 thousand);
